Home library in Bickley: a home library with a study corner
The brief
A home library with space for a large collection of books, and a quiet place to work.
Designing a home library
Bookcases wrap around the walls and return into peninsulas, giving space for books, files and display pieces. The desk run sits beneath the window, with storage drawers built in.
Lit glazed panels run above the shelving, and the grey-green paint gives the room a calm, traditional feel.
Most of the library is made from painted MDF in Farrow & Ball Card Room Green, while the insides of the cabinets are lined in Egger bookmatched oak for a warm contrast.
Materials and finishes
- Fronts: Painted MDF
- Colour: Farrow & Ball No. 79 Card Room Green
- Interiors: Egger bookmatched oak
- Hinges: Blum
Painted joinery is usually made from MDF. It stays flat and stable, so the paint goes on smooth and the edges stay sharp. The colour can be matched to the rest of the room.
A strong paint colour gives a room real character. Because every piece is made to order, you can choose any colour to suit the light in your room.
Why choose bespoke home libraries?
A bespoke home office is planned around how you work and what you store. Shelves, desks and cupboards fit the room exactly. The space stays organised and comfortable every day.
Made in our South East London workshop
We work from our own workshop in South East London. Each project starts with a measured survey and 3D renders.
Heights, handles and colours are agreed before a single board is cut. And because you talk directly to the makers, questions get answered quickly.

Questions about this home library in Bickley
Do you make bespoke home libraries in Bickley?
Yes. This project was designed, made and fitted for a home in Bickley, and we regularly travel from our South East London workshop to work across Bickley and nearby areas such as Bromley, Chislehurst and Beckenham. Every piece is made to measure for the room it goes into. We also work throughout London and across the whole of the UK, so wherever you are, we would be happy to talk about your project.
Can a home office be designed around books and files?
Yes. We plan shelving heights, file storage and desk space around what you actually need to store, so everything has a place and the desk stays clear.
Which material is best for office joinery?
Oak is hard-wearing and timeless, and painted finishes can be matched to the room. Desk tops are chosen to stand up to daily use.
How long does a bespoke office or library take?
It depends on what stage your home is at. If everything is ready, design to fitting usually takes around 1 to 2 months, and sometimes we can have it made and fitted in the same month you first come to us. Once we know more about your project, we will talk the dates through with you and agree them together.
Can you include lighting and cable management?
Yes. Lighting, sockets and cable routes for computers and printers are planned at design stage so the finished room looks tidy.
