Alcove display cabinet in Chislehurst: an arched display alcove
The brief
A living room alcove that adds storage and shows off favourite pieces, with a traditional look and a little drama.
Designing an alcove display cabinet
Painted shaker cupboards fill the base, with an arched display niche above lined in walnut. Glass shelves sit on brass supports in front of an antiqued mirror.
A strip of lighting brings the display to life, with a touch button set into the walnut lining. Small brass knobs finish the cupboard doors.
Materials and finishes
- Fronts: Shaker, painted MDF
- Colour: Farrow & Ball No. 291 School House White
- Interior: Walnut-lined niche
- Top: Stone-effect
- Handles: Small brass knobs
- Hinges: Blum
Shaker doors have a simple frame and a recessed panel. The style has been popular for over a century. It works in both period and modern homes.
Painted joinery is usually made from MDF. It stays flat and stable, so the paint goes on smooth and the edges stay sharp. The colour can be matched to the rest of the room.
Walnut is a rich, dark hardwood with a beautiful grain. It adds warmth and a sense of quality, especially next to painted or pale surfaces.
Why choose bespoke alcove cabinets?
Bespoke living room joinery is made for the exact shape of your room, including bays, steps and alcoves. It looks built-in rather than added on. It can also be finished to match the rest of your home.
Made in our South East London workshop
Nothing in this project came off the shelf. It was drawn as a 3D design and cut on the CNC machine in our South East London workshop.
Our own team then assembled and finished it. That control is what lets us build accurately around real walls, ceilings and floors.

Questions about this alcove cabinet in Chislehurst
Do you make bespoke alcove cabinets in Chislehurst?
Yes. This project was designed, made and fitted for a home in Chislehurst, and we regularly travel from our South East London workshop to work across Chislehurst and nearby areas such as Bickley, Bromley, Petts Wood and Sidcup. Every piece is made to measure for the room it goes into. We also work throughout London and across the whole of the UK, so wherever you are, we would be happy to talk about your project.
Can bespoke living room joinery be made for an awkward space?
Yes. That is the main advantage of bespoke joinery: every unit is made to fit the room, so we can work with bay windows, steps, sloping walls and alcoves.
How long does a bespoke living room piece take?
It depends on what stage your home is at. If everything is ready, design to fitting usually takes around 1 to 2 months, and sometimes we can have it made and fitted in the same month you first come to us. Once we know more about your project, we will talk the dates through with you and agree them together.
Can you add lighting to shelving and display units?
Yes. LED lighting can be built into shelves, niches and cabinets at design stage, with switches or touch buttons placed where they are easy to reach.
Which timber should I choose for display joinery?
Oak is light, hard-wearing and versatile. Walnut is darker and richer, and makes a bold feature piece. Both can be combined with painted surfaces for contrast.
Client tips: planning an alcove display cabinet in Chislehurst
- Think about what you’ll display. Measure books, records or ornaments so the shelf heights suit them.
- Plan lighting early. Shelf and niche lights need wiring, so decide before the decorating starts.
- Match your materials. Using the same timber or paint as other rooms makes the joinery feel part of the house.
- Plan ahead. If the room is ready, design to fitting usually takes 1 to 2 months.
