Japandi media wall in Clapham: light oak veneer framing around a plaster TV recess
The brief
A calm, natural media wall that keeps the TV and storage tidy, with open shelving for books and display.
Designing a Japandi media wall
The TV sits in a plaster recess framed in oak veneer, so the screen becomes part of the wall rather than the centrepiece. Open shelves with integrated lighting sit alongside for books and ceramics.
Below, a floating oak veneer media unit keeps the floor clear. Its drawers are made with dovetail joints, the same way fine furniture has been made for generations.
Materials and finishes
- Fronts: Oak veneer
- Finish: Lacquered oak veneer
- Carcass: Egger 18mm board
- Handles: Handleless, push to open
- Drawer runners: Blum
- Hinges: Blum
Oak veneer on MDF gives the warm colour and grain of real oak with a stable, consistent finish. It ages well and suits the soft, natural palette of a Japandi room.
Dovetail joints lock the drawer sides together, so drawers stay strong and square for years of daily use.
Why choose bespoke media walls
A bespoke media wall is built around your room and your TV, not around standard cabinet sizes. There are no filler panels or wasted gaps.
Cables, speakers and boxes are planned in from the start, and the storage is sized for the things you actually keep in the living room.
Made in our South East London workshop
We work from our own workshop in South East London. Each project starts with a measured survey and 3D renders.
Heights, handles and colours are agreed before a single board is cut. And because you talk directly to the makers, questions get answered quickly.

Questions about this Japandi media wall in Clapham
Do you make bespoke media walls in Clapham?
Yes. This Japandi media wall in Clapham was designed, made and installed by our own team, and we regularly travel from our South East London workshop to work across Clapham and nearby areas. Every piece is made to measure for the room it goes into. We also work throughout London and across the whole of the UK, so wherever you are, we would be happy to talk about your project.
Can a media wall hide cables and AV equipment?
Yes. We plan cable routes, sockets and ventilation at design stage, so the TV, speakers and boxes are connected neatly with no wires on show, and equipment cupboards can breathe.
How long does a bespoke media wall take?
It depends on what stage your home is at. If everything is ready, design to fitting usually takes around 1 to 2 months, and sometimes we can have it made and fitted in the same month you first come to us. Once we know more about your project, we will talk the dates through with you and agree them together.
Can you build a media wall with a plaster or painted recess?
Yes. We can combine joinery with a plastered or painted recess for the TV, and frame it in oak or another timber, so the screen sits neatly within the design.
Which wood works best for a Japandi media wall?
Light oak is the most popular choice for Japandi interiors because of its pale, even grain. Walnut gives a darker, richer look. Both can be paired with painted or plaster finishes.
Client tips: planning a media wall
- Decide your TV size first. The whole wall is designed around it, so pick the TV before we finalise the design.
- Plan the cables early. Tell your electrician where sockets and AV points should go before plastering.
- Mix open and closed storage. Doors hide the clutter, and open shelves give space for books and display.
- Plan ahead. If the room is ready, design to fitting usually takes 1 to 2 months.
