Nordique Understairs Storage with Oak Balustrade, Bromley
This bespoke understairs storage in Bromley turns the space below a staircase into a run of white handleless cupboards, with an oak string and a slatted oak balustrade above. It makes use of space that is often wasted. Every piece was designed, made and fitted by Creative Spaces in our own South East London workshop.
The oak slats let light through to the hall, while the cupboards hide everyday clutter.

Understairs storage in Bromley: storage tucked under the stairs
The brief
Practical storage under the stairs for coats, cleaning kit and household essentials, with a fresh look for the hallway.
Designing understairs storage
White handleless cupboards follow the angle of the stairs, framed by an oak string and newel. One cupboard opens to a utility space with shelves and room for a vacuum and ironing board.
Tall oak slats form the balustrade up to the landing, letting light through to the hall.
The handleless fronts in Egger Alpine White open with a simple push, so the cupboards blend into the hallway and the oak balustrade stays the star.
Materials and finishes
- Fronts: Handleless, push-to-open
- Colour: Egger Alpine White, with oak veneer
- Drawer runners: Riex
- Opening: Push-to-open
Oak is hard-wearing and naturally warm. It ages well and balances painted or white surfaces.
Handleless doors open with a recessed rail or a push catch. The fronts stay completely flat, which gives a calm, uncluttered look.
White fronts reflect light around the room. That helps in smaller spaces, and white pairs easily with natural timber.
Why choose bespoke understairs storage?
Bespoke storage turns awkward spaces into some of the most useful in the home. Made-to-measure cupboards fit exactly, so they look tidy and built-in.
Made in our South East London workshop
Every piece was designed, made and finished in our own workshop in South East London. We cut each part on our CNC machine for accuracy, then assemble and finish it by hand.
Before production starts, you see the design as a 3D render. You also speak directly with the people making your joinery.

Questions about this understairs storage in Bromley
Do you make bespoke understairs storage in Bromley?
Yes. This project was designed, made and fitted for a home in Bromley, and we regularly travel from our South East London workshop to work across Bromley and nearby areas such as Beckenham, Chislehurst and Orpington. Every piece is made to measure for the room it goes into. We also work throughout London and across the whole of the UK, so wherever you are, we would be happy to talk about your project.
Can bespoke storage be fitted in awkward spaces?
Yes. Spaces like under the stairs, around doorways and in alcoves are ideal for made-to-measure storage, because off-the-shelf furniture rarely fits them properly.
How long does a bespoke storage project take?
It depends on what stage your home is at. If everything is ready, design to fitting usually takes around 1 to 2 months, and sometimes we can have it made and fitted in the same month you first come to us. Once we know more about your project, we will talk the dates through with you and agree them together.
Which finish works best for hallway or understairs storage?
A durable painted finish is easy to clean and can be matched to your walls, while oak details add warmth and stand up well to everyday use.
Can shelves hold a lot of weight, such as books?
Yes. Shelves for books are made thicker or given extra support at design stage so they stay straight under load.

- Use awkward spaces. Under stairs, around doors and alcoves are perfect for made-to-measure storage.
- Pick a tough finish. Hallway storage gets daily use, so choose an easy-clean paint.
- Plan ahead. If the space is ready, design to fitting usually takes 1 to 2 months.
